No.3 - Fried Egg

No.3 - Fried Egg

We are already on our third drawing lesson in this course! Today we will introduce sketching and learn how to make a subject look three-dimensional by drawing in some light and shadow.

🖌️Brushes Used

  • Sketching: 6B Pencil (Sketching set)

  • Egg shapes: Studio Pen (Inking set)

  • Shading: Grunge (Textures set)

Create a new Procreate canvas using the Canvas Template we made for this class and let's get started. Below are some key features from this lesson for you to review.

Sketching

Sketching is a pencil plan of what you want your artwork to look like before you create your finished piece. It will help you plan and visualize your artwork. When sketching, it helps to start with simple shapes and add details progressively. Below are some simple steps you can follow to create your egg sketch. Remember that your lines don't need to be perfect!

You can also have a messier sketch by using multiple strokes to make a single circle. Whatever is easiest for you!

Using the Sketch to Make your Final Art

When you're finished with your sketch, it's time to color! Create a new layer to make your final art. I like to keep my sketch layer on top of everything else so I can always see it. Then you'll want to reduce the opacity of your sketch:

  1. Tap the 'N' on the sketch layer

  2. Move the Opacity slider until your sketch is barely visible

Now you can draw the shapes of your art, separating the different elements on to their own layers. Using the Studio Pen from the Inking set trace your egg sketch and fill your closed shapes using Color Drop.

Adding Form and Dimension with Shading

Light and dark values can help a flat surface seem 3D. Here is the basic process of shading:

  1. Decide which direction your imagined light source is coming from

  2. Turn on Alpha Lock - lock in your shape so you can add shading within

  3. Choose a color - for shadows, start with the base color and choose a color that is darker and more saturated

  4. Using a soft brush, add shadows opposite to your light source

  5. Add even darker shadows closer to the edge to enhance the effect

  6. Use a color lighter than the base, add a highlight closer to the light source

Blending Edges between Layers

If the edge of a shape seems too harsh or needs to be blended in with the layer below, you can use a soft brush to erase the hard edge away.

Finished Artwork:

Share your egg illustration below in the comments section! While you're there, check out your fellow Art Maker's work and like to comment on their illustration.

Up Next: Drawing No. 4 - Pizza

Great job on finishing your third illustration! In tomorrow's lesson, we will learn a little bit more about sketching, and I'll show you how to use the Liquify Tool and introduce you to Clipping Masks.
